MARE researchers found a macroalga that slow down aging

MARE researchers of the Polytechnic of Leiria (IPL) have concluded that the enriched phlorotannins and other components obtained from a macroalgae genus Fucus have an inhibitory effect on collagenase and elastase enzymes. What enzymes are these? These enzymes are responsible for the degradation of the skin matrix, therefore related to the skin aging process. Macroalgae came from Costa de Peniche, Leiria, and followed it for preparation - washing, freezing, lyophilization and grinding in the MARE laboratories. The investigation led to a patent application that has already been approved by the National Institute of Industrial Property.
