On October 10th, MARE was present at the 7th edition of the event "Caminho da Inovação" ("The Path of Innovation: Water in Climate Action - Building a Sustainable Future") organized by Águas Tejo Atlântico, Grupo Águas de Portugal, at the Alcântara Water Factory.
Researchers from MARE-Lisbon, Giulia Sent, João Pedro Marques and Bernardo Quintella, were in attendance, promoting the CoastNet – Rede Portuguesa de Monitorização Costeira project.
The CoastNet infrastructure remotely monitors Portuguese coastal ecosystems using satellite imagery and continuous measurements of environmental variables. The collected information is made available in near real-time through a geoportal with the significant advantage of providing open access to the data. It is a unique tool in the country and one of the few in Europe with these functionalities.
This annual event brings together collaborators from various Municipal Water and Sanitation Services in the country and companies, projects focused on innovation, technology, as well as entrepreneurship in this area.
With over 500 participants, this was a unique opportunity to establish contacts that will help expand and strengthen the CoastNet network to other regions of the country, allowing the collection of physicochemical and biological parameters of water, essential information for all those involved in continental and coastal aquatic ecosystems.
