MARE takes part in the start of Ciência Viva no Verão

MARE, the Pavilion of Knowledge and Lisbon City Council launched this year's edition of the Ciência Viva no Verão programme with a boat trip along the Tagus estuary.

Heading for the island of Rato in the Tagus estuary, this activity covered various aspects related to the landscape and the characteristics and importance of the estuary, as well as the environmental impacts of human actions, climate change and marine litter.

MARE researchers Maria José Costa and João Paulo Medeiros were also on board. ‘Departing from Santo Amaro Docks, we set sail for the island also known as ‘Mouchão das Ostras’ - a name that dates back to the 19th century, when oysters were grown there in nurseries for export,’ explains João Paulo Medeiros via his social networks.

Ciência Viva do Verão is an annual programme of activities led by researchers and experts from scientific institutions and associations, museums, local authorities and companies, in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. This was one of more than 400 activities taking place from July 15th to September 15th as part of the Ciência Viva no Verão programme, in which MARE is taking part with various activities from the north to the south of the country.
