On 23 May, the auditorium of the Fluviário de Mora will open its doors for the fifth edition of the Fluviário de Mora Symposium, an event that celebrates science, communication, and the shared commitment to protecting aquatic ecosystems. This year’s edition, co‑organised by the Fluviário de Mora, the University of Évora, and MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, is dedicated to the theme “From Information to Action: Communicating to Protect Aquatic Ecosystems.”
The opening session will feature Luís Simão de Matos, Mayor of Mora, Pedro Raposo de Almeida, Director of MARE and researcher at the University of Évora, and Luísa Sousa, Technical Director of the Fluviário.
The programme focuses on three key areas: improving science communication, bringing scientific knowledge closer to society, and inspiring real behavioural change that benefits aquatic ecosystems.
This edition features contributions from Zara Teixeira, a member of MARE’s Board of Directors responsible for outreach and communication and a researcher in the field of Ocean Literacy, Filipe Banha, a MARE researcher in the biology and ecology of freshwater fauna, with a focus on invasive species, and e João Gago, a researcher at MARE and the Santarém Polytechnic, whose work focuses on the impact of non-native fish species on river ecosystems.
The event will also include the presentation of the Fluviário Award 2025 – Young Scientist of the Year, and will conclude with a free visit to the Fluviário.
Registration is open until 20 May. Not to be missed!
