MARE researchers Filipe Ribeiro and Pedro Anastácio, along with Inês Sequeira and Helena Geraldes (from Wilder), compiled a set of articles published in Wilder as part of the LIFE-INVASAQUA project on Aquatic Invasives. This book - 25 Espécies Aquáticas que Estão a Invadir Portugal - involved the collaboration of 20 authors from 11 research centers and eight higher education institutions (from the Algarve to Minho).
An exotic specie is a specie native of another geographical area that has been transported by human action. The problem is that they often have a very negative impact on biodiversity and, consequently, on the economy, society, and even human health. Researchers study the changes that aquatic systems have undergone and the introduction of these new species into them. It is necessary to understand how were they introduced and what the repercussions are to address the problem. Examples of these species include the bleak, the Asian clam, or the Japanese clam. In this compilation of articles, you can find a lot of information about these species, understand where they come from, and learn about the solutions to reduce their negative impact on ecosystems.
