On March 17 and 21, MARE and the Office for Gender Equality and Inclusion of the University of Évora organized a special activity to celebrate Women's Month, Speed Dating with women scientists!
Over the two days, the 10th grade students from Gabriel Pereira Secondary School had the opportunity to talk to four female researchers to discuss science, gender equality and the crucial role of women in the production of knowledge. MARE researcher Sara Silva was one of the scientists taking part. The researcher had the opportunity to share her work with the students, giving them new insights into the biology and ecology of migratory fish.
Through short five-minute conversations, the students had the chance to talk to the scientists in a more informal, dynamic and interactive environment. This enabled them to explore themes about the scientists' areas of research and reflect on the fundamental impact of women in science.
This event thus became an essential activity to raise awareness of the need to break down barriers associated with gender in the world of science, in access to and progression in scientific careers.
