On World Water Day, the project "Sentinelas da água" (Water's guardians) is launched, a science-citizen project that involves the Guardians of the Sea, who will be monitoring the water quality of the Sado estuary. This Ocean Alive project in partnership with MARE and the Centro de Investigação em Energia e Ambiente do Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal is funded by the Action Project program.
To identify and create an information base on potential sources of water pollution in the Sado estuary and to promote the improvement of water quality, over the next 6 months, the project will have information based on the local knowledge of the fishing community and samples of water that will be collected by the guardians of the sea, carried out by IPS researchers and the collected data will be available to the public, researchers and decision makers through MARE's Portuguese CoastNet Coastal Monitoring Network.
