MARE researcher appointed for World Ocean Assessment III

MARE researcher José Guerreiro has been appointed as an expert for the World Ocean Assessment III alongside DOALOS (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) – UN. "Share the knowledge" is the motto of DOALOS, simple and significant for this UN mechanism whose goal is to regularly analyze the environmental, economic, and social aspects of the world's oceans, both current and predictable. This will contribute to strengthening the regular scientific assessment of the state of the marine environment in order to improve the scientific basis for policy development.

This goal is achieved through the report prepared by global experts from different areas of expertise, which now includes José Guerreiro for the third assessment (2021-2025). "It is a great honor and satisfaction to see our work of the last years recognized globally, particularly in the field of ocean governance and policies," says the researcher, concluding that "the work should start soon, with the assignment of responsibilities to each of the invited experts."

The researcher will support the scientific component of ocean governance and sustainability, something that he has been developing and deepening through the recently created Ocean Governance and Sustainability Lab.

This is the first time that a MARE member is involved, since the creation of DOALOS in 2002 at the Rio+10 summit in Johannesburg, although some Portuguese have already participated, namely Prof. Maria João Bebiano from the University of Algarve.
