On March 31, the workshop “Introduction to Meta-analysis in Ecology” will be held at the Cetemares building in Peniche, under the guidance of researcher Verónica Ferreira.
Meta-analysis is a statistical tool for combining the results of empirical studies on the same topic, taking into account the accuracy of the studies. Often used in the context of a quantitative systematic literature review, meta-analysis makes it possible to (i) assess the consistency of results between studies, (ii) draw general conclusions and (iii) identify gaps in research. Meta-analysis is especially useful for (i) testing hypotheses that have not yet been empirically tested, (ii) testing predictions of ecological hypotheses, (iii) assessing the impacts of environmental factors (e.g. due to human activities), (iv) testing the effects of covariates that are difficult to test in a single study and (v) assessing the effectiveness of management practices. This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of meta-analysis and familiarize participants with the methodology, as well as preparing them to assess the quality and interpret the results of meta-analyses.
The theoretical topics will be accompanied by carrying out a live meta-analysis from a matrix that will be provided to participants in advance so that they can follow the procedures simultaneously on their computers. The meta-analysis will be carried out using the OpenMEE open-access program, and participants should bring their own computer with the program installed.
Registration until March 14th HERE
