National Maritime Day

16 November is National Maritime Day. This year, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the importance of the sea to Portuguese history and identity, the economy and the development of our country will be highlighted.

To mark this date, MARE has prepared various activities for everyone to celebrate.

 

 15 November - ‘MARE of Stories: Science in Books’ 
Using books, MARE is tackling various topics related to the ocean, from its biodiversity and the threats it faces, to its chemistry, physics and technology. Starting with a reading session, followed by hands-on activities, the book chosen to celebrate National MAR Day will be ‘Senhor Mar’ by André Carrilho.
Where: Casa da Criança de S. Julião in Figueira da Foz.

 

 

16th November - Flag Action 2024
MARE is teaming up with 1,200 Scouts from the National Scout Corps (CNE) for this year's Flag Action. This activity will consist of an action to clean up the river area, accompanied by specialised elements, followed by various workshops and ateliers on topics such as the environment, sustainability, oceans and waste.

Time: 9am - 6pm

 

16th November - Marine Challenge
MARE's Regional Research Unit, MARE-IPLeiria/Cetemares, will be holding a challenge on Marine Life. Those who take part and come first will be eligible to win prizes.

In partnership with the Municipality of Figueira da Foz, MARE's Regional Research Unit, MARE-UCoimbra, opens the door of the MAREFOZ Laboratory to schools in the region.
