The MarCODE project, which aims to develop a multidisciplinary tool to improve the tracking and ecological labeling of marine species with commercial interest, starts this month.
For the coordinator of this investigation, MARE researcher Bernardo Duarte, “this tool aims to identify marine species and areas of capture / production, contributing to the respective ecological and economic valorization, stimulating the development of certification programs.”
The interdisciplinary team includes Vanessa Fonseca, a co-responsible researcher, as well as researchers in the fields of Biology and Informatics, namely Isabel Caçador, Anabela Silva, Ana Rita Matos, Ricardo Melo, Ricardo Dias, Rogério Tenreiro, Ana Tenreiro, Andreia Figueiredo, Maria José Costa, Patrick Reis-Santos, Susanne Tanner, Rui Rosa, Pedro Mariano, Sara Silva and Cátia Pesquita.
This project, supported by the Instituto de Biossistemas e Ciências Integrativas (BioISI) and LASIGE, and the lab - Laboratório de Biomonitorização e Ecotoxicologia (BIOTOX) has scientific partners like the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) e a Docapesca. It has a total financing of € 1,257,208.71, being co-financed by the Operational Program MAR 2020 under the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
