Last October, MARE researcher Manuel Graça published the book ‘Rivers of South America’, which aims to showcase the rivers of this continent. The book follows on from ‘Rivers of North America’ and ‘Rivers of Europe’, which aim to publicise the importance of rivers to humanity.
‘Rivers of South America’ offers a broad perspective on South American rivers, their environment, freshwater biodiversity, threats, conservation and cultural heritage, examining the physical, chemical and biological environment of South American rivers and the people who live in their basins.
The book contains a large number of maps, photographs, graphs and tables to demonstrate the beauty of each river and provide important information on the history, physiography, climate, hydrology, biodiversity, ecological processes, environmental problems, management and conservation of each river.
Manuel Graça and the other authors of the book consider it an important reference publication for aquatic ecologists, environmental authorities, local and national governments, academics, NGOs and those interested in the preservation and management of running waters.
