MARE researcher launches book on octopus biology

MARE researcher Rui Rosa is the main editor of the recently launched book "Octopus Biology and Ecology" (Academic Press, Elsevier). This book contains 23 chapters and includes 92 national and international contributors from 18 different countries.

In 478 pages, the book describes important aspects of the life of these molluscs, covering diverse aspects such as their origin, biogeography, life history, distribution, behaviour, migratory patterns, diet, predators, parasites, among other topics.

The book focuses mainly on species that live in coastal areas, including a discussion of the potential threats and unexpected benefits of climate change and the oceans. Detailed accounts with colour images are also provided for each of the 21 selected species.

The final chapter provides a detailed analysis of octopus research and the thematic areas in which this field could expand in the future, recognising in particular the growing importance of research into the effects of global change. In addition to climate change, the main areas covered include behaviour and cognition, iEcology and citizen science, bio-robotics, deep sea research and culture and well-being.

The book is also essential reading for scientists linked to fisheries biology and aquaculture, conservationists and managers.
