MARE and the University of Coimbra invite you to attend the seminar "Managing estuaries, rias, coasts and seas - how to make sure we sustainably protect the natural system and still satisfy society's wishes and demands?", led by Professor Mike Elliott, to be held on 12 July at 3pm at the University of Coimbra Campus (Rua da Graça 9, Figueira da Foz).
This seminar aims to present the conceptual diagram linking society's basic needs (such as food, shelter and water, among others) to the activities carried out to obtain them, as well as the strategic measures to be developed, in the legal and administrative contexts, for proper environmental management. The brief overview will illustrate the ecology of these areas and how it can be altered by human activities. It will also describe the uses, goods and benefits we obtain from these areas, and how their integrated management should be carried out.
The seminar is free but registration is compulsory and can be done HERE.
It is emphasised that environmental management - ideally - should involve all stakeholders, including the complex legal and administrative network that already exists. A discussion will be organised on ways to determine whether management is successful, nature-based solutions will be presented and the need to carry out multidisciplinary research that integrates political and management requirements will be discussed.
The participation of all key actors is crucial to ensure that the views of all sectors that can impact the sustainability of the Mondego estuary are included in this conceptual diagram.
