World Ocean Day 2024

World Oceans Day is on 8 June and MARE has prepared several activities to mark the occasion.

 

From 4 to 8 June, the schools of Mealhada, in collaboration with the Open University, are hosting researcher Sônia Seixas for two lectures entitled ‘How important is the Ocean?" and "The Ocean is a great home’ on the importance of the ocean and its biodiversity. These activities are not open to the public

 

From 6-8 June, the ‘Aquaculture’ workshop will take place at the CETEMARES building in Peniche, aimed at bachelor's and master's students, technicians, teachers, researchers and scholarship holders. This workshop will be dedicated to the assembly and maintenance of life support systems for aquatic organisms and includes a theoretical component on basic knowledge of life support systems and a practical component on the concepts learnt. This workshop is co-ordinated by MARE researcher Teresa Baptista. Registration is closed. To find out more click HERE

 

On 7 June MARE joins the Association of Parishes of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park for a scientific dissemination session at the premises of the Azenha do Mar Fishermen's and Residents' Cultural and Development Association. From 3pm you can meet our researchers working along the Costa Vicentina. To access the programme click HERE

On 7 June, join MARE and our researcher Sónia Seixas at the Tertúlia dos Pirilampos, in Mealhada, and immerse yourself in the lecture ‘Marine Bioluminescence’ on the light emitted by marine organisms. registration includes dinner, is compulsory and limited to the number of places. On 8 June, MARE teams up with The Trash Traveler for the final of Ocean Hike Madeira After a series of beach clean-ups and awareness-raising activities, The Trash Traveler will bring all the rubbish collected across the island to Funchal to create trash art.
