In 2021, in the "Learning for our Planet" study, UNESCO examined the programs and school curricula of 50 countries and found that half of the programs made no reference to climate change, and only 19% focused on biodiversity loss. As a result, UNESCO announced the goal of including Ocean Education in school curricula in all its member states by 2025. In Portugal, several initiatives have emerged recently to improve the literacy of the school community, but there's still a long way to go for this topic to become a constant part of school curricula and for teachers to feel comfortable teaching it.
In this context, MARE researchers are organizing a training workshop to motivate and build confidence on teachers to teach various topics related to the Ocean, from its current state to monitoring, the causes and consequences of environmental degradation, and new opportunities. The workshop will align with the Sustainable Development Goals.
