SNIPAD platform available to the public

An interactive web platform on the freshwater fish and diadromous migrants of mainland Portugal, SNIPAD, is now available to the public.

SNIPAD is a knowledge support tool that gathers, systematises and facilitates access to scientific, technical and administrative information on this group of species, aimed at a wide range of users: the general public, fishermen, technicians, researchers and entities involved in the protection, conservation and management of aquaculture resources.

This platform has two main functionalities: the Data Portal and the Fishbot.

In the Data Portal area, users can obtain information on the native and exotic species that occur in mainland Portugal, consult maps and lists of occurrence records.

Peixe-robot is an application where users can use interactive identification to find out which species they have observed, based on its morphological characteristics. It also has an additional tool that detects the user's location and, based on this geographical information, provides a list of species that occur in the vicinity of the location.

SNIPAD was developed as part of the project Red Book and National Information System for the Dulciaquic and Diadromous Fishes of Mainland Portugal. Financed by POSEUR and the Environmental Fund, this project was promoted by FCiências.ID - Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, through two R&D Units - cE3c and MARE - in partnership with the Instituto de Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas, I.P., and involved the collaboration of specialists from various institutions.
